The Setlist for May 16, 2025

Introduction

Hey you’re here! Thank you.

You need to listen to this Soot Sprite record. When I asked to hear an advance copy I thought it would be good, but over the last several days I’ve become convinced it’s one of the best of the year. It’s an incredible protest record, it’s inspiring and lovely. You must hear it.

The other essential this week is Anna Justen’s record. It’s so much richer than I expected it to be (and I loved the singles). When you hear it as a dream journal it absolutely soars.

Got a record I should hear? Let me know about it.

Standout tracks

“Ghosts and Lichens” by Festiva
This is a weird single from Portland Maine’s Festiva that has kept me coming back for days. It’s strange in the best ways.

“Last Laugh” by Tuxis Giant
The new single from the person behind the True Names thing from a couple weeks ago is a promising taste to a new record. Low key and warm indie rock.

“MMA Math” by Swallow the Rat
This Auckland band sounds kind of like a revival of Girls Against Boys, one of my all-time favourites.
